The field may have been small but they made up for it in action as the Rolling Thunder Modified put on one of the best shows in recent memory Saturday night for the fans at East Carolina Motor Speedway. Eldon Zacek, in the Uni-Jig car, a relative newcomer to the tour battled to the wire with Joe Scarbrough and AJ Winstead (in Commonwealth Environmental Associates sponsored ride)to capture his first RTM Victory.
Ronnie Davis started from the pole position even though he and Winstead ran the same exact qualifying times. Davis was awarded the pole due to his position as the current point’s leader. Davis, Winstead, and Zacek pulled away from the rest of the field in the early laps unit lap 15 when Zacek missed the turn and ran over Winstead, sending Winstead spinning in turn 2. Winstead was forced to pit with a left rear flat tire.
Zacek and Winstead were forced to restart in the rear of the field. With Davis still in command of the field the race went back to green flag racing. On lap 55, the #21 of Joe Scarbrough and the #12y of Jimmy Humblet tangled causing the yellow flag to once again fly as Humblet spun into the infield with a flat left front tire. Winstead pitted as well to again change tires and for adjustments from his earlier spin with Zacek.
Scarbrough was able to make the pass on Davis as Zacek, and Conner were able to follow past the #14 as well. While this action was happening up front; Winstead and Humblet were making a charge from the back.
Zacek made the winning pass in the closing laps when then leader Joe Scarbrough got high going into turn 1 allowing the #53 car to make an inside pass for the lead. The two were racing side-by-side for a good portion of the last 10 laps.
It was an exiting race for sure. Next stop on the RTM Schedule is a stop at another driver-favorite track Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC.
