A.J. Winstead started 10th, and with a bold outside pass wins tonight’s RTM race at Langley Speedway swiped the lead from Jimmy Humblet on lap 71 and notched the win in a 75-lap contest for the Rolling Thunder Modified tour. Joe Scarbrough was the pole starter, at 85.947 mph, and set the pace for the first 37 laps. Ronnie Davis held down the runner-up until lap 18 when he gave way to Humblet. Meanwhile, Scarbrough was beginning to weaken at the head of the field, the result of right-rear tire problems. As the leaders worked traffic, Humblet ran down Scarbrough and snagged the lead on lap 38. Just three laps later, Humblet had pulled away by half a straightaway as Scarbrough continued to struggle. Scarbrough finally spun on lap 48 to bring out the fourth of the race’s six yellow flags. He headed to the pits during the ensuing caution period for a new tire. Winstead, who started 10th, lined up second for the restart. Humblet held Winstead at bay until the final restart, at lap 70. Under green for the last time, Winstead powered to the outside of Humblet off the second corner. Humblet maintained a slight edge as they returned to the flagstand. On the next lap, though, Winstead surged ahead and was on his way to the win. At the finish, Winstead was the winner by four lengths over Scarbrough, who slipped past Humblet on the last lap to salvage a second place finish. Humblet was third, followed by Michael Leech and Mike Hanbury.
