ASHEBORO, N.C. – George Brunnhoelzl III opened the 2012 season just like he finished the 2011 season during his NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship run – with a win at Caraway Speedway on Saturday night. Although Brunnhoelzl started from the pole and led every lap it wasn’t easy, as he had to hold off Jason Myers on the final lap to win by just .236 seconds for his 12th career win and sixth at Caraway Speedway.L.W. Miller followed Myers for third with Brandon Ward fourth and John Smith fifth. Daniel Hemric was sixth with Brian Loftin seventh and Burt Myers eighth. Gary Fountain Sr., and Rich Kuiken Jr. completed the top 10
Although Brunnhoelzl has enjoyed recent success at Caraway Speedway he really didn’t know what to expect in the season opener.“This is a brand new car and the guys did a great job building this car and Howard gives me great equipment,” Brunnhoelzl said. “We had a little bit of a problem with the steering but all in all it was a good day for us here at Caraway.”
For Jason Myers, he was all smiles after his second-place showing.
“Second place in one of these races is a big deal because you are racing the best of the best in these Whelen Southern Modifieds,” Jason Myers said. “Running second is good but knowing we had the fastest car at the end of the race really puts a lot of hope for the future for this race team especially here at Caraway where you have to run well to have a chance to win the championship.” Miller finished third but was involved in an incident with Andy Seuss on Lap 93 on a restart when the drivers made contact in Turn 2 sending Seuss into the wall and ending his night.
Although the contact with Seuss didn’t end the night for Miller, he said he had nothing for Brunnhoelzl.“The pit stop we made at halfway helped us a little, but he (Brunnhoelzl) had the best car all night long,” Miller said. “Jason (Myers) had the fastest car at the end and probably would have won the race if had gotten by me a little sooner.”
Daniel Hemric led the group of seven rookies in the field with his sixth-place finish to earn Sunoco Rookie of the Race honors, while John Smith won the Featherlite Move of the Race and Gary Fountain Sr. used his first career top-10 finish to win the Coca-Cola Move of the Race. A.J. Winstead came home in 15th place after starting 17th in his first NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour start.
The race was slowed nine times by caution with one red flag for 17:58 after the Seuss-Miller incident on Lap 93.
March 19, 2012 – 11:15am

Tweet DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – There’s no place like home and for the sixth time in the history of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, the season will begin at its ‘home track.’

Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C., will play host to the Spring Classic 150 on Sunday, March 25, and drivers know they have to run well at Caraway if they want to have a shot at the 2012 championship. The .455-mile oval will hold six of the 12 races this season, including four of the first five on the schedule.

Having held 39 races over seven seasons – the most in tour history – Caraway has proven to be the measure for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Just one champion – Burt Myers in 2010 – claimed his title without winning an event there. Myers has just one Caraway win despite claiming 12 Coors Light Pole Awards there. His lone triumph came in April 2005, the tour’s inaugural season.

The track will celebrate its 40th Whelen Southern Modified Tour race with the Spring Classic as the new season gets underway. Seven previous race winners at the track are entered for the event with Brian Loftin and L.W. Miller leading the way with seven career victories each. Other Caraway winners expected to race are Tim Brown, defending tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III, John Smith and Andy Seuss.

With 24 cars pre-entered as of March 14, each team has dreams of a championship season and they look to kick start the 2012 campaign with a solid performance and take the first step to achieving the ultimate goal.

Race Notes
Familiar Ground: The Spring Classic 150 marks the first of five events for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour scheduled at Caraway Speedway in 2012.

The First Modified Lock Goes To … : The winner of the Spring Classic 150 will be the first Whelen Southern Modified Tour driver locked into the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2013. Each race winner throughout the season from the Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tours will earn guaranteed starting positions for the combined Whelen Modified exhibition feature on the short track at Daytona.

New Math: Over the offseason, NASCAR’s regional touring series adopted the points program previously instituted at the national series level in 2011, the 43-to-1 system. The same bonus system also applies: one point for leading a lap, one additional point for leading the most laps and three points for a win. Therefore, the maximum point total that can be collected at each event is 48 compared to 190 in the more complex old system.

Expecting New Faces: A.J. Winstead leads a group of four drivers expected to make their NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour debut at Caraway. Joining Winstead are Kyle Ebersole, Danny Bohn and Joe Scarbrough.

Welcome Back: Ric Kuiken, Jr. is returning to fulltime competition this season since taking a break following the 2009 to concentrate on his studies as an engineering student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Also expected to make his first tour start since early in the 2010 campaign is J.R. Bertuccio Jr.

Busy, Busy, Busy: This weekend’s Caraway 150 begins a stretch of four races in five weeks for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour with upcoming events at Caraway (April 7), South Boston Speedway (April 14) and again at Caraway (April 21).

After a mildly successful season both racing Modifieds (99) part-time and their Late Model Stock Car (00), the Winstead Motorsports Crew is making a move. During 2011, the 99 and 00 cars had consistent finishes which resulted in 2 wins, 2 second place runs and many more top 5 and top 10 runs. While running two different type cars in at several different tracks was challenging, the Team is making the move to the NASCAR Whelan Southern Modified Tour. We are looking forward to the change in Venues and Competition. The Winstead Motorsports crew has decided to forgo their normal beginning of the year racing adventure to Speedweeks at New Smyrna Speedway in FL in order to complete the building on their Troyer Modified…..stay tuned!

The largest field of cars this season, in both the Late Model and GrandStock divisions, highlighted a great night of racing at Southside Speedway on Friday. Nineteen Late Models took the green flag for the first of two 50 lappers and Chris Dodson came from his
sixth place starting position to hold off Eddie Johnson to take the checkered. Dodson had the
race under control, but a late caution and the cone restart put Eddie Johnson beside of Dodson for
the green, white, checkered restart. Dodson was able to hold for the win, followed by Johnson,
Brad Davis, Jeff Oakley and Raymond Pittman. Winstead in the Golden Eagle Energy Chevy was running as high as 4th until a right front flat ended the teams run prematurely.

Race #2:
After Dodson drew a 7 for the redraw in race two, Jeff Oakley took advantage and picked up
his second win of the season in the second 50 lap race for the Late Models. He was followed by
Eddie Johnson, Chris Dodson, A.J. Winstead and Mike Kersey.

Fifteen Grand Stocks were on hand and Austin Dodge also picked up his second win of the
season. Dodge drove his Chevy ahead of Bobby Curtis, J.D. Eversole, Todd Ruggles and Woody
Ellington.

Late Models Put on a Show at Southside Speedway

Midlothian, VA – The Late Model division made the most of their 75-lap feature and put on a
great show for the big crowd on hand Friday night at Southside Speedway.
The 00 Golden Eagle Energy Drink car of A.J.Winstead lead the first 23 laps until:
The 25 of Nick Smith made the most of some early drafting to overtake two cars on the 22nd lap. With
momentum on his side, he slid easily into first on the next lap and grabbed a sizeable lead.

A six-car battle for sixth in lap 40 created a crash in turn four and bunched up the field. Chris
Dodson got a good jump on the restart.

Dodson and Smith raced door-handle to door-handle, swapping leads until lap 53 when Dodson
took the lead for good. He grabbed a considerable lead and never looked back.

Meanwhile, Smith held off Brad Davis for second.

Top-5 finishers were Dodson, Smith, Davis, Adam Resnick and A.J. Winstead.

Midlothian, VA – Chris Dodson driving the Williamsburg Honda sponsored car saw the red and white of Nick Smith’s Late Model division car pass him by a nose and hang on for the win in the first of two races for the division Sunday night. However, no one was getting past Dodson in the second race. He flew through the field in the first seven laps and never looked back.

Dodson started the second race in fourth position due to an invert of the top five finishers in the first race. By lap 3, Dodson was in second place; by lap 8, he’d overtaken the No. 18 car of Brad Davis.

Cautions bunched the field up twice behind Dodson, but to no avail. Finishing in the top five in the race were Dodson, Jeff Oakley, Chris Johnson, Davis and Adam Resnick.

In the first Late Model division race, Smith marched his way through the field into second place by lap 27. Threatening Dodson for the lead, Smith finally got an edge on lap 34, taking the bottom line through turn 4. Top five in the race were Smith, Dodson, Johnson, Brad Davis, and Oakley.

Winstead in the Golden Eagle Energy Drink Chevorlet, had handling issues in the 1st race and DNF. In the second race, starting 12th, the 00 of Winstead came home in eighth, after being spun in a late race incident by the 52 of Timmy Nice.

Marriott ExecuStay hosted 15 guest in the racetack suite for the twin modified races held at Langley Speedway. It was also the first night for Winstead Motorsports sporting the Golden Eagle Energy Drink colors on the Modified. The opening night for Southside Speedway was to be the opening night for Golden Eagle, but Mother Nature had other ideas as rain cancelled the event.

The Following reprint courtsey of Langley Speedway:MEDIA CONTACT: Gary Daughtrey

The KeesVacations.com Modifieds ran a pair of 25-lap sprints and Mike Rudy swept the doubleheader to notch his first two victories of the season.
Shawn Balluzzo earned the pole for the first of the twin features, qualifying at 84.860 mph. Rudy was second-fastest, followed by Chris Johnson, Jimmy Humblet and Robbie Babb. Cameron Patrick, who came into the night with a four-race winning streak, didn’t post a lap and started near the tail of the 16-car field.
As the cars circulated on the pace laps, Johnson headed to the pits, giving up the third starting spot. He rejoined the rear of the field prior to the green flag. Babb moved up to third on the grid, while Joe Scarbrough slipped into the fifth position.
On the start, Balluzzo and Rudy dueled side-by-side with Balluzzo nosing ahead at the end of lap 1. He finally cleared Rudy in Turns 1 and 2 on lap 3. Rudy dropped in line behind Balluzzo and began to stalk the leader. Meanwhile, they were steadily pulling away from third-place Babb.
After tailing Balluzzo for the first 14 circuits, Rudy launched a bid for the top spot on lap 15, driving to the inside of the leader. He completed the pass as they headed into Turn 1 to begin lap 16. Just three laps later, Rudy had already manufactured a five-length advantage.
The first caution flag appeared on lap 20 for Joed Bruce’s spin in Turn 4. As the field gathered for a restart, Randy Monroe Jr. gave up the fourth spot in line, choosing to pull alongside Rudy.
While Monroe couldn’t overtake Rudy, he did manage to slide in line ahead of Balluzzo. After only one green-flag lap, the second, and final, yellow flag flew for Johnson’s spin off Turn 4.
On the last restart, Monroe poked the nose of his machine underneath Rudy as they roared into Turn 1. They battled neck-and-neck until lap 23 when Rudy regained command. As Rudy pulled away, Balluzzo moved to the inside of Monroe, swiping second on lap 24.
At the finish, Rudy was the winner by 0.622-second — about three lengths — over Balluzzo. Monroe was third, followed by Humblet and Patrick, who rallied from the 14th starting spot to take fifth.
The lineup for the 25-lap nightcap was determined by the finishing order of the first race, placing Rudy and Balluzzo on the front row.
The first attempt at a start went awry, resulting in the race’s only caution flag.
Finally under way, Rudy and Balluzzo race wheel-to-wheel until they reached Turns 3 and 4 where Rudy motored ahead. Balluzzo slipped into second, followed by Monroe, Patrick and a side-by-side tussle between Humblet and A.J. Winstead, which Winstead eventually won.
Balluzzo stayed within a couple car-lengths of Rudy for the first handful of laps. On lap 8, though, Rudy suddenly extended his advantage to four lengths and began to ease away. By the time the crossed flags were displayed, his lead had grown to nearly half a straightaway.
Passing the halfway mark, Patrick zeroed in on Monroe, looking to gain the third spot. Soon, though, he began to lose touch with Monroe, who maintained a solid grip on the position.
At the finish, Rudy was the winner by 1.351 seconds over Balluzzo. Monroe collected his second third-place finish of the evening, while Winstead and Humblet rounded out the top five.
In position for a top-five run, Patrick fell badly off the pace in the closing circuits and limped home in 10th.

It was a family affair of sorts at South Boston Speedway Saturday.

With father, Eddie Johnson on hand, Midlothian driver Chris Johnson driving the RJR, Transit Lumber Chevorlet, won the 50-lap IMCA-Style Modified race.

Johnson nudged his way past Richmond driver A.J. Winstead driving the Marriott Execustay Chevorlet on lap 32 and led the rest of the way to garner his first win at South Boston Speedway, where his grandfather, Cal, won in dirt modifieds and his father has won in NASCAR Late Model Stock Car competition.

Starting fourth in the field, Johnson went to third on the opening lap and second on lap 21, before getting past Winstead on lap 32.

Johnson then survived a restart following the race’s only caution on the final lap to claim the win, beating Winstead by .169 second.

Rusty Wood of Midlothian, Hunter Slayton of Richmond and Joe Scarbrough of Charles City rounded out the top five finishers.
Winstead led laps early before being passed by Johnson, the pair exchanging a few taps in the process of competing for the win.

“He used his bumber on me a couple of times, but I figured it was all good. We made some changes from last time but couldn’t get any forward bite,” said Winstead.

“So, we’ll change it back again and come back.”

Chris Johnson called it a “great race,” while Eddie said his son “does a wonderful job, and he stepped up to keep this Johnson race team going.”

“My father, Cal, won a lot of races here in the 50s, and I’ve been able to win some races here, but I’m just a proud papa,” said Eddie Johnson.

“This is his night,” he said referring to his son’s win.

Johnson averaged 61.143 MPH in a race that took 21 minutes to run.
